Who watches the Watchmen? Plenty of people do and the buzz around the big-screen adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ popular, award-winning graphic novel has just been turned up a notch with a slew of Watchmen goodies hitting the net.

For those not familiar with the story, Watchmen is set in 1985, in an alternative history United States where costumed adventurers are real and the country is edging closer to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union. It tells the story of a group of past and present superheroes and the events surrounding the mysterious murder of one of their own. Watchmen depicts superheroes as real people who must confront ethical and personal issues, who struggle with neuroses and failings, and who‚Äö?Ñ?Æwith one notable exception‚Äö?Ñ?Ælack super powers.

The highly anticipated film adaptation of Watchmen was directed by Zack Snyder (”300″) and stars Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Matthew Goode, Stephen McHattie and Carla Gugino.

The film is not scheduled to be released until 2009, but in the mean time, Apple has just released the first trailer for the film in glorious HD Quicktime, giving us our first look at the Watchmen characters in action.

To Coincide with the release of the trailer, Entertainment Weekly is giving us an excusive first look at the making of the film, which includes an in-depth interview with director Zack Snyder. Snyder has also granted MTV News an interview, in which he discusses an “easter egg” available in the film’s trailer.

Also of note, Dark Horizons has scored an exclusive interview with one of the film’s stars, Matthew Goode. The up-and-coming British actor discusses his role as one of the films heroes, Adrian Veidt, a.k.a Ozymandias, as well as his starring role in the upcoming film adaptation of “Brideshead Revisited”.

Furthermore, the film’s official site has been updated with a new, Flash animated look. While there, be sure to check out the video production diaries, which takes you behind on the scenes on the making of the film.

Watchmen is scheduled for a March 6, 2009 release.
